Technology & Technical Specifications

Design, materials and surface treatments for patient-specific solutions

CADskills combines digital design, material selection and surface treatments in the development of patient-specific implants and surgical guides.

Starting from CT or CBCT imaging data, each case is designed based on the patient’s anatomy and the surgeon’s indications. Depending on the solution and clinical requirements, CADskills works with materials including titanium, PEEK, UHMWPE and biocompatible resin for surgical guides.

Design

From imaging data to patient-specific design

CADskills designs patient-specific implants based on DICOM data from the patient’s CT or CBCT scan. During upload, the surgeon provides additional case information and indications for the desired implant shape.

The dataset is used to create an initial implant design. If applicable, structures from the unaffected side can be mirrored. The design is developed in communication between CADskills designers and the surgeon before final review and approval via the website.

Before production, the virtual design can be subjected to Finite Element Analysis. After production, the implant is optically scanned and compared to the STL file to verify dimensional accuracy within a tolerance dictated by the clinical needs.

Materials

Materials selected according to the solution

CADskills works with different materials depending on the patient-specific solution and its intended use. These include titanium, PEEK, UHMWPE and biocompatible resin for cutting and drilling guides.

CADskills can deliver a skin patch allergy test, including all used materials, if desired by the surgeon.

  • Titanium

    Titanium

Titanium implants are additively manufactured using selective laser melting (SLM). 3D printing makes complete design freedom possible.

The titanium used by CADskills is Ti6Al4V grade 23 ELI, featuring high strength, low weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance.

  • PEEK

    PEEK

PEEK, or Poly-ether-ether-ketone, is a synthetic material. It is mainly used for cranioplasty, while facial implants in PEEK are also an option.

The polymer is milled. PEEK can be modified intra-operatively using a high-speed burr.

  • UHMWPE

    UHMWPE

CADskills uses UHMWPE for articulating surfaces. The UHMWPE is enriched with vitamin E.

  • Cutting guide materials

    Cutting guide materials

CADskills cutting guides are 3D printed in a class 1 biocompatible resin that is autoclavable. The material is developed for printing precise surgical guides and similar devices.

Surface Treatments

Surface features according to implant design and clinical indication

CADskills applies different surface treatments and surface features depending on the implant type and its intended function.

  • Scaffold

    Scaffold

The 3D printed porosities of a defined volume provide secondary stability by osteointegration. In the TMJ prosthesis, the scaffold provides a means of enthesis reconstruction, meaning muscle reattachment.

  • HadSat® coating

    HadSat® coating

The condylar head of the CADskills TMJ prosthesis is coated with a HadSat® coating to improve wear resistance and have lower friction between the two articulating surfaces.

  • Micro-shot peening

    Micro-shot peening

The lateral surface is micro-shot peened.

  • Acid etching

    Acid etching

    Acid etching further promotes osteoconductivity.

  • Ultrasonic cleaning

    Ultrasonic cleaning

Ultrasonic cleaning uses implosion of bubbles to remove contaminants in a gentle way.

  • Polishing

    Polishing

The surface of the implant that is not in direct contact with bony material can be highly polished if desired by the surgeon.

  • Anodizing

    Anodizing

The AMSJI implant will be anodized to make it “pinkish” for aesthetic reasons.
